Due to the vastness of cyberspace, tools such as social bookmarking have made it easy for Web users to not only have a way of remembering a favorite Web page or website in order to reduce the time spent on searching for them, but also to share these bookmarked Web pages and websites to other Internet users in a collaborative fashion.

It usually involves social bookmarking websites wherein its registered users can add their favorite bookmarks to their accounts using keyword tags to organize them, making it easier for other users or visitors to search for similar topics or subjects that the user has bookmarked

What social bookmarking does is basically it allows Internet users registered in social bookmarking websites to identify sites or search and discover new resources that fall under a particular category that the user has created. These sites our resources could offer something new or useful to the user, depending on the user’s preference. Social bookmarking also helps determine if a particular site is trendy and useful or not through a decision made by the community. How this works is that any user can share a bookmark, and the larger community makes a collaborative decision as to whether that bookmark is cool and useful or not. This helps make it easier for other users to navigate through the overwhelming amount of Web-based information.

Although social bookmarking has a lot of advantages to offer the different Internet users who subscribe to such a tool, it is not without its share of disadvantages as well. One draw back with this tag-based system is that there are no standards set for the keywords, controlled terms and vocabulary used. This can create a problem, especially since the tag-based system relies on people, and not on any program created in the Internet. This means that this type of system is not flawless in terms of organizing its different bookmarks since the people are the once organizing the tags, thereby creating an inconsistent standard and management system for tags. People who create the tags just create them according to their own accord, creating confusion with the other users who rely on the tags to find what they are looking for in these social bookmarking websites.

The lack of standards for tag structures, such as capitalization, singular vs. plural, as well as other similar issues, in social bookmarking makes it susceptible to mistagging. This can be caused by misspelling certain words, by tagging certain subjects using keywords that have two or more meanings, by tagging websites and/or Web pages with unclear tags caused by synonym-antonym confusion, or by using unorthodox and too “personalized” tags that other users will not be able to understand or decipher what the tag is about. Aside from these problems, social bookmarking is also susceptible to corruption and collusion due to its popularity. This type of system can be used by users to help make their Web page or website more visible in the Web by optimizing their search engine results.

Fortunately, these disadvantages and problems may be short-lived, especially since social bookmarking services are quickly evolving into becoming a much better tag-based system.

Social bookmarking has been around for a couple of years, but for me, it’s a whole new concept as I learn more and more about internet marketing and how best to get traffic to my site and blog. It is a process that is becoming more and more popular as a means of generating traffic and page rank, so it’s something I want to get started with right away! Most of us who own a PC know that when we come across a website that we like, we can add that site to our list of favorites or bookmark it for our own future use. Social bookmarking takes that organizational process a step further by making public the list of sites you frequent. This article will discuss what social bookmarking really is, its advantages, and how it can help your website.

What is social bookmarking? As mentioned above, social bookmarking is a system of organizing websites that you want to re-visit, but rather than bookmarking them in a folder on your computer, you bookmark them on a special social bookmarking website. If you do a Google search for “social bookmarking websites” you will find a list of the top social bookmarking sites that you can join to add your favorite sites to. The way you go about this is to use keywords that represent your favorite site’s content, or in other words, you “tag” it. You can then make your entries public or private. First, Blogs were the BIG new thing as a traffic source, and still are, but guess what… now it’s Social Bookmarking.

Social Bookmarking if you aren’t quit sure is simply a service where the web user can surf the web and bookmark there favorite websites, articles, pictures, etc., to their account through the Social Bookmarking service they signed up with.

The advantage to doing this from the web users point of view is they can locate all their favorites from one easy to navigate location.

How they locate their saved bookmarks is quite simple. All they do is ‘Tag’ them using keywords associated to whatever it is they are bookmarking. So when it comes time to wanting to access that information all they have to do is type in the ‘Tag’ associated to their query.

Okay, that’s the basic run down of what Social Bookmarking is and its primary use. Now lets move on to the juicy stuff… Traffic Generation.

What I didn’t tell you in the above explanation is that if the web user chooses they can make their bookmarks public.

Now, what do I mean by public? It means that the Social Bookmarking community and the web will have access to whomevers bookmarked information, whether its articles, pictures, websites, reviews , etc… etc.

Let me explain further from an marketers perspective.

Let’s say I opened up an account at an Social Bookmarking service and it is ready for me to start bookmarking whatever it is I want to bookmark.

Well, guess what I’m going to start bookmarking?

You guessed it, my websites and all their webpages. I’m also going to ‘Tag’ these webpages using keywords I think other web users within my Social Bookmarking community and the web would search for so they will find them. And since I’ve made my account a public account anybody will be able to find my bookmarks giving my websites webpages “FREE Targeted Traffic”.

Your pages as I mentioned earlier can be Product Reviews, Articles, Sales Letters, or VRE with Adsense.

Your totally in control as to what you want to bookmark.

Just don’t ‘SPAM’ them with junk. People use these services to locate information, so simply give them what they want and in return you get “FREE Targeted Traffic” which in turn could make you some sales without costing you a dime.

I have to say that’s pretty Cool!!

With search engines becoming so full of junk and ‘SPAM’ people are starting to resort to other means of locating the targeted information their looking for. Thats where Social Bookmarking communities come into play and where you can benefit, if you follow the rules.

More and more Social Bookmarking services are popping up because of there ability to easily locate targeted information by simply using ‘Tags’ making it easier for the web user to find the information their looking for.

I truly hope you see how POWERFUL – Social Bookmarking – can be as another means of targeted traffic generation and urge you to look into it further for your own sake to see if it’s something you might want to consider as another source of traffic generation for your websites.
